34: Dr. Jayson and Mira Calton | The Importance Of Food Quality On A Low-Carb Diet

AIR DATE: January 10, 2013 at 7PM ET
FEATURED EXPERT: Dr. Jayson & Mira Calton
FEATURED TOPIC: “The Importance Of Food Quality On A Low-Carb Diet”

One of the biggest criticisms of the low-carb diet over the years is that it sacrifices choosing the best quality foods in favor of the simple process of cutting carbohydrates. But in 2013, that’s not the reality of what most of us low-carbers are actually doing. The challenge that we face as carb-conscious consumers is in balancing our desire to control the amount of carbohydrates we consume with the need to obtain the most nutrition out of the foods we eat. That’s where our guest experts Dr. Jayson and Mira Calton come into play.

In 2012, they shared about the critical importance of getting the proper amount of micronutrients in our diet with the release of their book Naked Calories (listen to my interview with them in Episode 530 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show”). But in 2013, they’re back with a brand new book releasing on February 26th entitled Rich Food Poor Food: The Ultimate Grocery Purchasing System (GPS) that serves as a virtual guide for how to go shopping without getting confused by slick marketing by food companies. Recognizing the importance of food quality on a low-carb diet is what we discussed in Episode 34 of “Ask The Low-Carb Experts.”

Here are just a few of the questions we addressed in this episode:

ELIZABETH ASKS:
Just keeping it real, but, sometimes I worry that all of this focus on organic, grass fed, blah, blah, blah and it makes me think that I can’t afford to be successful on this diet. I looked into buying a 1/2 a cow and we just don’t have that kind of money lying around to plop down. We have a deep freezer and I buy meat in bulk when it is on sale. I have a family of six. If I eat grocery store meat, am I just up the creek without a paddle?

SUSIE ASKS:
What if your choice is eating low-carb CAFO and non-organic or not eating? What if you can’t afford organic and grass fed despite making compromises to other parts of your budget…what’s better? Low carb cheap grocery sales prices or the SAD with the same types of ingredients? Pay now or pay later…but what if for some of us it’s already later and we don’t have any more pennies in the piggy bank?

CHRIS ASKS:
I wonder what the ramifications are if one is eating LCHF, but doesn’t have access to grass-fed meats. What happens if you have no choice but to eat mostly non-grass fed meats due to budget constraints and/or availability? Do the benefits from LCHF still outweigh the negatives due to the food quality? What will those negatives be? Are there other ways to offset those negatives?

LAURIE ASKS:
Is Mio ok to mix in with club soda? I’ve given up my pop habit and find it refreshing…like a fruity seltzer. I drink a lot of coffee and can’t stand plain water.

Great tip about adding cream to low fat/nonfat greek yogurt. You get the fat-soluble vitamins and other goodies that come from a pastured dairy but save some money on the protein portion.
